Fading diaspora needs the Christians
Writing in the Jewish Chronicle (22/2/08), Calev Ben David, says that decreasing numbers of people identifying as Jews in the diaspora means that their ability to have influence on behalf of Israel is declining. He writes about ‘the growing ideological opposition to Israel in some Western intellectual circles which questions Israel’s very right to exist.’ He then notes that the Jewish communities in key western nations such as the US, UK, France and Germany are shrinking while the Muslim populations are growing.
As a counter to this he writes: ‘The growing prominence of the evangelical Christian community in the US and elsewhere as backers of the Zionist enterprise (including their cultivation by certain sectors of the Israeli leadership), is in no small way influenced by a recognition that Israel’s bedrock support outside its borders needs to be expanded well beyond a fading diaspora.’
